What January Looked Like

We didn't travel over Christmas break,
but I wanted a vacation from cooking.
We ate at Mi Pueblo one night.
LOVE their vegetable tamales SOOOO much.

It was a Monday night and B was in charge of the
FHE treat. We decided to order churros. Yummy yum yum.

While my dad was in town, he encouraged me to print
out more photos to add to his side of the family tree.
So glad he did. We were able to fill in lots of blanks.
Love adding faces to the names.

Our temple is closing for a year and a half.
We snuck in one last visit before it closed.
And it was snowy!

Naomi got baptized!
And I got to speak at her baptism.
So excited for her.

Had Elders McFadden and Miller over for dinner.

Played 5 Second Rule for FHE.
Fun new game we got from Gigi and Grandpa.

One afternoon I got to watch Whitney in action
as she taught the preschoolers. She is so good!

One of Whit's Christmas presents was
tickets to School of Rock in Charlotte.
Shelley had said that the company girls might be doing a workshop
the weekend it was in town, so I had to get tickets on a weeknight.
We felt so rebellious being out until midnight on a school night!

It was a fun show.
The kid musician/actors were very impressive.

Whit also had her first choir concert of the year at school.
Their choir is small!

But they are good!
They did one number with the high school chorus and
it was PHENOMENAL.

She had a duet during one of the songs.
She sounded amazing.

Post-concert froyo

One Friday night, we didn't have anything planned,
so decided to head downtown to show the kids
the Boxcar Arcade.
We had a GREAT time playing old-school arcade games.

They rocked Pole Position,
taking four of the top six spots!

Whitney randomly made us meringues one
Sunday afternoon.
She got the recipe from her Harry Potter cookbook.
They were good, tasted like homemade marshmallows,
but crunchy.

Andrew had to work on MLK day,
but the kids and I were free.
We picked up Emily in Salisbury and
headed down to Concord Mills for the day.
We visited Sea Life aquarium.

It was just OK,
too pricey for what you got.

Also stopped at Dave and Buster's so I could do some coin pushing. :)

January was full of SPELLING BEE PREP.
Andrew and I worked with Caroline
almost every night to learn as many words
as we could from this study list.

And it paid off!

She won her school spelling bee!

Her words:  Oval, bicycle, superb, diagram,
valuables, balloonist, testament, practically, bulletin,
affirmation (misspoke), vegetation (misspelled),
segregation, and grandiose.
Woo hoo!

Celebratory froyo.
Again. :)

SNOW DAYS!!
We had a pretty big snowstorm in January,
enough to cancel school and seminary for three days.

Made for some fun lightsaber duels,
sledding, and snowball fights.

Wyatt's birthday is Jan 21.
In honor of him, lots of our friends and
family members are doing acts of service
to kids on that day and sharing publicly
to help uplift Ang and Forrest and their family
in what would otherwise be a very hard day.

We found out that the non-profit that I volunteer with
ran out of grant money to help provide groceries to
newly-arrived refugee families.
We decided to help supplement their groceries.
The kids helped me shop.

The 21st was on Sunday.
After church, we delivered our goods to
one refugee family I had never met.

We were also able to deliver some things to the N family,
a family from the Congo that I've been tutoring in English.

We stayed at their house for a while and all of us
practiced English together.

It was a great day and I was happy my family could
meet this awesome family I've been telling them about
for the last couple of months.

Our other project in honor of Wyatt was for a friend's grandson.
Baby Davis was diagnosed with brain cancer.
I worked with lots of wonderful women in the tennis community,
who contributed generously to this collection of gift cards.
I put it together in this fun bouquet to deliver to Davis' parents.

Love it when Whitney fills our house with piano music.

THE PUNDERDOME!!!
This game was one of Andrew's Christmas gifts.
The kids roll their eyes when we play,
but it is seriously hilarious.
We are so bad at it, that it makes us belly laugh.
I love it.

One of MY Christmas presents from Drew was a
chance to go indoor skydiving!
They have a center in Raeford, NC,
about two hours south of here.
Andrew took the day off work and we had SUCH a great time.

This video shows me at the beginning,
then my instructor (Manny) doing crazy tricks,
then the Army Golden Knights practicing formations.
It was so much fun.
And harder than it looks.

Afterward, we stopped in Pinehurst to explore.

We ended up in a little museum,
learning some of the history of the area.

I loved this mustache tea cup.
Gotta keep that 'stache clean!

Then we walked around the historic village.

It was a beautiful day.
And we got terribly lost.
But we didn't even mind.

We loved spending the day together!
Felt like a little getaway,
even if we didn't stay the night.
(I later found out rooms at this inn are $800+/night,
good thing we can make it a day trip!)

B and Emily at a church dance--
they dressed up like characters from Grease.

My daffodils have emerged!

Andrew got to take a super quick work trip to NYC.
He braved the cold to visit Times Square for a bit.

Church basketball has started!

Both kids are playing and we have fun watching them.

We FINALLY finished our other Harry Potter puzzle.
It was HARD!

Wow, I thought January was usually a boring month.
Not this year!
We had a lot going on!

Spotlight 2018: Andrew

Andrew, 2017

Something in 2017 that...

*you saw or did that was awesome:  Going on our 20th anniversary Disney cruise to the Caribbean with Patrick and Marianne.

*you'll remember: Going on our family cruise and visiting the Mayan ruins in Chacchoben.

*you want to forget:  Experiencing so much grief when Wyatt passed. Spending the entire year living with pain in my right shoulder. I was diagnosed with a torn labrum, bone spur, scar tissue, and arthritis. Surgery to come in February.

*scared you:  Getting a phone call that Dad would need quadruple bypass surgery.

*you're good at:  Fantasy basketball.

*you're proud of:  That our family has fun together and enjoys being together while the kids are still at home.

*made you happy:  Watching the many hours of practice that Brandon and Caroline put into rock climbing pay off in their competitions. Watching Whitney dance so beautifully in the Nutcracker. And hearing about Andrea dominating her tennis season.

*was exciting: Throwing down what will probably be my last legitimate dunk at the stake center.

*you earned, won, or accomplished:  I won my fantasy basketball league in a thrilling victory over my best friend/fantasy nemesis, Michael, thanks to Lebron James and Draymond Green.

Any other notable changes/events for 2017:  Visited Portugal and Windsor Castle on two very cool work trips. Bought a new van. Bought a used Toyota Solara for the kids to drive. Played a Canon in D duet with Whitney at the ward talent show. Went to the Winston-Salem Open and the Wyndham Open with Andrea. Went to Carolina Beach and the Biltmore with my parents. Got promoted to staff writer at Cat Scratch Reader, the Carolina Panthers blog at SB Nation. And, as always, our fun summer road trip to Utah.

Windsor Castle, England

Porto, Portugal

Follow-up from last year's hopes:
Hold my own in tennis after getting bumped to a 3.5. (I went 4-0 in my men's league, despite playing with my bum shoulder.)
Have the Panthers return to the playoffs. (Yes, but it was a disappointing loss in the wild card round.)
Win my fantasy basketball league. (Yes!!!!!!!!!!!)

Hopes for 2018:
That my shoulder surgery is successful.
That I win my fantasy basketball league.
That the Panthers make at least the divisional round of the playoffs.
That BYU football isn't so awful that it makes me want to burn all my hats and shirts.
That my job at work of leading compensation and benefits is something I enjoy.

Something you like about your job:  The variety, the complexity, the independence that I have, and being a member of three different leadership teams helps me see the whole business.

Something you don't like about your job:  That the number of HR people we have the US continues to shrink and shrink.

A job you might want when you're older:  Professional sports blogger--Lakers, Panthers, and fantasy basketball

Spotlight 2018: Andrea

Andrea,
who loves being a 40-something

Something in 2017 that...

*you saw or did that was awesome:  going on a 40th birthday Disney cruise with Patrick and Marianne!

*you'll remember:  watching Whitney and Brandon's pas de deux in the Nutcracker

*you want to forget:  the only thing I can think of is that I want to forget how much it hurt when Wyatt passed away. But I don't want to forget Wyatt. And I know that part of loving someone is the pain that you feel when you lose them. But it's still hard.

*scared you:  when our neighbor called me at midnight because there were drunk guys fighting in my driveway and they ran into our backyard and our neighbor called the cops. Kinda scary.

*you're good at:  planning fun adventures for my family.

*you're proud of:  going 19-2 in my fall tennis season. Woot!

*made you happy:  going on our 11th annual summer road trip. My favorite.

*you learned: how to not stress out over playing the organ at church. :) But I DO still make a funny face every time I hit a sour note. I hear it makes for good sacrament meeting entertainment.

*made you laugh: Oh my gosh. The funniest thing happened while I was at states with my tennis team. I laughed and laughed and laughed. And couldn't wait to tell the story to Andrew and the kids when I got home. And they didn't think it was funny. At all. But I could hardly tell the story I was laughing so hard. I think you had to be there.

Ok, so at states we wore coordinating team colors. One day our colors were black and pink. Several of us were driving around Wilmington together after our match that day. I saw a woman walking with a black and pink backpack on. I commented, "Oh, look. That woman's backpack matches our uniforms!" I was simply making an observation. Well, one of my teammates said, "Oh, Andrea. Jump out and take it while the light is red!" And everyone started joking around saying, "Oooooh. I thought Andrea was the nice one! I can't believe she's thinking about taking that!" It cracked me up! I said, "I was just noticing the color! Brenda was the one that wanted me to steal it!" Ha ha ha! It still cracks me up as I'm typing.

*was silly:  Playing Punderdome with my family. I am SOOOO bad at coming up with puns. So bad that it's hilarious.

*was exciting:  Getting to fly to Denver all by myself for a long weekend with Andrew's parents and siblings at Time Out for Women.

*you earned, won, or accomplished:  My Adams Farm tennis team took 3rd place out of 16 teams. My USTA 6.5 combo team made it to states and I won three of my four matches there. I turned forty.

Any other notable changes/events for 2017:  After successfully going through chemo, Wyatt had a relapse of leukemia, including lesions on his brain. He had a long battle with more chemo, radiation, the hope of a bone marrow transplant that didn't happen, and eventually being put on hospice. He passed away in May. All of our hearts were broken. I've never cried so much in my life. It made me very grateful for the plan of salvation and to know Wyatt's life continues. But we sure miss him.

I get to spend a lot of my time volunteering this year. I go to Caroline's elementary school twice a week, volunteering in three classrooms and the media center. I also recently started tutoring a refugee family in English. I meet with them once a week. They are a family of nine from Congo. And once a week I drive the leftover cafeteria food from the elementary school to a rec center, where it feeds kids in an after school program.

I continue to teach seminary. We started the Book of Mormon this year. I have 4-5 students that come most days. I love starting my day in the scriptures with them.

I started out with eight students...but we've dwindled.

Hopes for 2018:
Go on a cruise for spring break.
Have another great road trip with my kids.
Continue to find ways to serve in my home, ward, and community.
Improve in my Spanish.

Follow-up from last year's hopes:
Go on the annual summer road trip. (YES! It was a fabulous one!)
Paint the downstairs of our house. (Yes! It's a pretty gray with blues in the breakfast nook and powder room.)
Buy a new van. (Yes! I'm so happy with it! A 2016 Chrysler Town and Country.)
Continue studying Spanish. (Yep, pretty much every day. I still use Duolingo and Andrew and I have started reading general conference talks in Spanish most nights. Que bueno!)
Renew my AZ dental hygiene license. (Yes! I didn't even have to pay the hundred dollar late fee this time! Yippee!)
Win at least two of my USTA matches. (Oh, yes! TWELVE all together between spring, summer mixed doubles, and fall.)

Hobbies:  Tennis, board games, traveling, fantasy football.

Something you like about your job:  getting to spend so much of my time serving and taking care of others.

Something you don't like about your job:  putting away the groceries when I get home from grocery shopping.

A job you might want when you're older:  dental hygienist. Again.
